If a filter is proved expensive one can use a piece of cloth to sieve and trap the dirt so that the water is clean.
Distillation is also a way of water purification. Though the process is slow it can still be affected especially for people with a lot of raw untreated water. This process clears all bacteria, germs, metals and salts for salty water. It involves utilizing heat to collect pure water that is in vapor form. This vapor is then cooled and thereafter reversed into liquid water for drinking. Most large industries use methods to purify their water.
Lastly even though not commonly used nowadays there is the usage of clay vessels. This method was commonly used in the rural areas and is still used in some parts of it. The clay pots purified muddy water by blocking the mud and allowing pure water to pass. This left the drinking water with a lovely earthy smell while drinking.
